The University of Chester Students’ Union is involved with raising awareness about humanitarian issues. A number of members of the student union and staff members volunteer with a wide range of charities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The students' union runs a variety of events that brings together the university community. These include but are not limited to:With over 30 shops across campus, the student market caters for both students and the public. Students can find out what is happening in their city through events such as Chester Unplugged, where popular bands play live in the city centre. There are many different types of shops on campus ranging from fast food chains to delicatessens. Facilities include a barber, a hair salon and a beauty salon. The student market is located in the heart of the Llay hall, giving students a great location to shop for groceries, books or daily essentials. The student union also manages the smoking smoking ban in many parts of the city centre. In addition to catering for students, Student Accommodation is available for all University of Chester-based staff and their families. Accommodation includes one bedroom apartments with en-suite bathrooms, kitchen facilities and study areas (some come with television). All rooms are fully furnished with furniture provided by the University's central store. Facilities include ample parking, fully equipped kitchens, lounges/dining areas, laundry facilities and internet point. The Co-operative movement began in Chester in 1844 when the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers was formed for the purpose of improving the conditions of working men. In 1875, 25 years after its formation, it became affiliated to The Co-operative Society. The Chester Society remains a part of this nationwide co-operative movement with its own branch based within University College Chester.
